NBME Grant Opportunities: LOI due March 23, 2026

NBME Call For Letters of Intent: Innovations to Advance Pathways and Bridges to Medicine Programs

Letters of intent are due by March 23, 2026.

Full proposal submissions are due by June 28, 2026.

NBME has a long history of contributing to the medical education and assessment communities with the goal of improving patient care through quality assessment of medical professionals. To further build on our contributions and our commitment to increasing representation in the medical and assessment professions, we are providing resources to assist programs and building collaborations that aid learners with education, mentorship and resources at a crucial time in their development. We hope to help programs develop and utilize best practices to drive positive changes in medical education in the long term and support the Association of STEMM Bridge and Pathway Programs (ASPBP) in developing a pathway program community of practice. Since 2024, NBME has collaborated with the ASPBP to award the Innovations to Advance Pathways to Medicine Programs Grants. In two grant cycles, NBME has awarded 21 grants totaling $450,000 to institutions and other nonprofit organizations implementing pathway programs.

As we continue our support of pathways to medicine, NBME and ASPBP are initiating a call for applications in 2026 to continue to investigate the effectiveness of strategies that increase the representation of individuals in the medical profession. These grants are intended to support pathway programs across the entire educational continuum. Community-based, elementary to high school and higher education programs are invited to submit applications that focus on evaluating the evidence for success of a particular educational or programmatic intervention strategy.
There are two different funding opportunities:

SEED Grants

One-time grants of up to $20,000 for programs wanting to develop the foundation for a rational design of an intervention strategy or strategies.

Material and Resource Grants

One-time grants of up to $5,000 for programs wanting to improve their curriculum with needed educational resources such as learning management software, student data management software and educational or learning software.

Eligibility to apply includes not-for-profit organizations and programs or their fiscal sponsors and not-for-profit institutions.

Initial letters of intent are due March 23, 2026. After reviewing letters of intent, NBME will invite full proposals in April. Full proposal applications are due June 28, 2026.

In addition, ASPBP will host an information session on "Pathway Grant Letter of Intent and Application," that will take place on Monday, March 9 14, 2026, at 12:00 PM EDT via Zoom.

During this session a member of the ASPBP Research and Scholarship Committee together with Joanne King from NBME will be presenting on the upcoming Request for Letter of Intent and Grant Applications. The session will provide an overview of these funding mechanisms and the application process. Past recipients Emil Chuck and Angel Gonzalez will be joining the presentation sharing their insight and helpful tips. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions via the Zoom chat function.

Dr. Nancy Moreno

Nancy P. Moreno, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Huffington Department of Education, Innovation & Technology, Thomas R. Powers Chair of Educational Outreach, and Director of the Center for Educational Outreach at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Houston, Texas, USA. Trained as a biologist, she aims to improve the quality of science and health teaching and learning at all educational levels; develop faculty members’ abilities as educators and educational scholars; develop a more scientifically literate population; and promote preparedness for, and access to careers in science, medicine and the health professions. Her funded research develops educational partnerships, pathway programs, and transdisciplinary science and health educational materials on topics such as science communication and neuroscience. She also served as Associate Provost of Faculty Development at BCM.

Dr. Moreno is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and received the Robertson Presidential Award for Excellence in Education, BCM’s most prestigious award for faculty educational contributions. She earned her BA with distinction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, MSc from the Institute Nacional de Investigaciones sobre Recursos Bioticos in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, and her PhD in biology from Rice University.

ASPBP Welcomes Plenary Speaker Susan Ipri-Brown!

Susan Ipri-Brown

Susan Ipri-Brown is the principal consultant at Empowerment Levers, specializing in the strategic implementation of educational programs. Prior to her consulting firm, Susan served as the Strategic Initiatives Manager at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Office of Advanced Manufacturing. At NIST, Susan expanded strategic collaborations in advanced manufacturing technology and workforce development among Manufacturing USA stakeholders inside and outside of government. Susan additionally worked as the founding Associate Dean for Educational Outreach and as an Associate Professor of Engineering Instruction at Hope College. She has also held positions with the Northwestern University Office of STEM Education Partnerships, several North Carolina school districts, Delphi Automotive Systems, and the Michigan Legislative Service Bureau. As an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Federal Fellow, Susan served a year at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Within her work and community, Susan is a long-time advocate of programs that enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in the engineering profession. She served as the 143rd president of ASME where she is a Fellow and has held a range of leadership positions. Susan earned her master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University.

"Empowering Your Sphere of Influence"

Call for Tips and Tricks for Successful Pathway and Bridge Programs

Abstract Submission Deadline: October 31, 2025

ASPBP is excited to continue the series "Tips & Tricks for Successful Pathway and Bridge Programs" in the upcoming issue of PBP Wire (January/February 2026 Vol. 9). We want to hear your tips and tricks for running successful programs and are excited to announce the call for short article abstract submissions.

These articles should offer practical and feasible advice for improving the recruitment of students to and/or participation in programming, ways to increase pre-matriculation competencies of students, or ways to improve teaching and learning. Programs should target one of the following populations- K-12 outreach and enrichment, undergraduate engagement, or post-baccalaureate programs. Articles should be brief- a maximum of 800 words, not counting your abstract, references, and acknowledgments. Captions count towards the word limit. Articles are limited to a maximum combined three figures/tables, as our goal is to limit the article to two and a half pages.

Interested authors should submit a 200-word abstract discussing their proposed article by Friday, October 31, 2025. Abstract submissions can be made on the member portal here. Individuals will be notified in early June of their selection. Only members who are up-to-date on their dues are eligible to submit.

The Association of STEMM Pathway and Bridge Programs (ASPBP) would like to introduce you to Dr. Ernie Morton, PGY-4 Urology resident at Emory University, Plenary Speaker of the 2025 ASPBP Virtual Conference! Dr. Morton's Plenary Session is titled They're In! Now What? Unique Challenges Faced by Students Who've Successfully Completed a Bridge or Pathway Program and How to Support Them Once They've Moved On.

Dr. Ernie Morton

Dr. Ernest Morton, MD, MS, MBA, is a PGY-4 Urology resident at Emory University. He earned his MD from Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine in 2022, where he also completed the inaugural “Bridge to MD” program and received his MS in 2017. He holds an MBA from Western Michigan University as well.

A dedicated advocate for diversity in medicine, Dr. Morton served as president of the WMed Alumni Association (2022–2024) and is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Drawing from his own journey to medical school, he authored "A Med Student’s Guide to Getting In," a resource to help pre-med students navigate the admissions process with insight and strategy.

Dr. Morton is actively engaged in translational research and quality improvement initiatives at Emory, with a focus on genetic testing and counseling in urology patients. He is also engaged in the integration of AI tools in outpatient clinical workflows. He is a proud member of the R. Frank Jones Urologic Society and remains committed to mentoring aspiring physicians from underrepresented backgrounds.

ASPBP September 2025 Webinar

The ASPBP September 2025 Webinar, Moral Distress: An Evolving Challenge, will take place at 2 PM EDT on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. The Webinar will be led by Bonnie M. Miller, of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Bonnie M. Miller, MD, MMHC

Bonnie M. Miller, MD, MMHC: Dr. Miller is a Professor of Medical Education and Administration Emeritus at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM). She attended Colorado College for her undergraduate education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1976. she received her M.D. degree at the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1980. She then moved to Nashville for six years of post-graduate training in general surgery at Vanderbilt University Affiliated Hospitals. After completing her residency, she spent one year in Seattle completing a fellowship in hepato-biliary disease at the Virginia Mason Clinic. In 1987, Dr. Miller returned to Nashville, and for 12 years served as an attending surgeon at Vanderbilt-affiliated teaching hospitals.

From 1999 until 2019, Dr. Miller served in a variety of education leadership roles at VUSM, including Associate Dean for Medical Student Affairs (1999-2006), Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (2006-2008), Senior Associate Dean for Health Sciences Education (2008-2019), Associate Vice-Chancellor for Health Affairs (2013-2016), and Executive Vice-President for Education Affairs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC, 2016-2019). In the latter roles, she oversaw all programs related to the continuum of physician education at VUSM/VUMC. In addition, she oversaw administration of 10 other degree programs offered by VUSM, as well as certificate programs offered by VUMC's Center for Programs in Allied Health.

During her tenure, Dr. Miller guided VUSM through several cycles of curriculum reform. Specifically, she led VUSM's transition to Curriculum 2.0, an innovative program that moved core clerkships to the second year, allowed individualized pathways through the 2-year post-clerkship phase, and employed a competency-based approach to assessment. VUSM subsequently became recognized as a leader in medical education and numerous US medical schools adopted essential elements of this model. Dr. Miller has consulted with many schools that seek to transform medical education in the US and abroad.

Dr. Miller served as the principal investigator for VUSM's Accelerating Change in Medical Education grant from the American Medical Association, and was a founding board member of the Kern National Network for Caring and Character in Medicine. In addition, she received grants that supported her interests in the moral and professional development of physicians, curriculum change, technology-enhanced learning, and continuous learning in medicine. Most recently, she was the principal investigator for a grant from IBM-Watson Health that resulted in the creation of a list of interprofessional competencies for the use of artificial intelligence-based tools in clinical settings.

Since retiring from VUSM, Dr. Miller has served as a physician advisor for the Tennessee Department of Health Office of Primary Prevention, helping on special projects related to health equity, population health, and healtjh professions education.

2 PM EDT, Wednesday, September 24, 2025 - Moral Distress: An Evolving Challenge

Moral distress was first described in 1984 by Andrew Jameton in the context of clinical nursing as, "The negative emotions or feelings that arise when one knows the morally correct response to a situation but cannot take action because of hierarchical or systematic constraints." Since then, the construct has been expanded and applied widely to many professions and professional situations in which persons find themselves faced with circumstances or demands that threaten their moral integrity. This talk will review the evolution of the construct and will challenge participants to consider how recent social and political developments might create moral distress in their own professional lives. It will also explore ways of constructively dealing with moral distress.

Call for NBME Pathways Grant Reviewers

We are looking for members who are interested in helping with the review of submissions for the NBME-ASPBP Pathways grants. You may recall that we are collaborating with NBME on this exciting funding mechanism.

We are in need of reviewers for the two types of grant proposals: 20K seed grants and 5K resource grants.

The review period will be from July 28 to September 5, 2025. This is an important task and step forward in advancing the mission of ASPBP. We hope we can count on your participation!

The ASPBP May 2025 Webinar, Lab Coats & Listening Ears: Why Community Voices Matter in Research Design and Discovery, will take place at 2 PM EDT on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The Webinar will be led by Shantoyia (Toy) Jones, of Xavier University of Louisiana, and Shatonda S. Jones, of St. Bonaventure University.

Shatonda S. Jones, PhD, MA, CCC-SLP, CBIST (Right)

Shantoyia (Toy) Jones, PhD: Dr. Toy Jones is a tenured- Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Director of Women’s Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana. Dr. Jones holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology with a graduate minor in Multicultural Studies from the University of Kansas. Before her role at Xavier, she worked clinically in university counseling centers, hospitals, and sexual assault response centers with survivors of sex trafficking, survivors of political torture seeking asylum, and directly with community stakeholders mobilizing grassroots efforts. As a counseling psychologist, her research focuses on the discovery of new phenomena and developing interventions that will best serve the needs of Black women and girls and the larger BIPOC community. As a qualitative and mixed methods researcher, she explores the interrelatedness and intersection of the following variables: sexual violence, trauma, IPV/DV, exploitation, identity development, sexual health decision-making, joy, pleasure, and sisterhood. She is the founder and principal investigator of the Social- Justice Participatory Action Research Collective (SPARC) and is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded researcher. Dear to her is her role as a “big sister” to TRUST, a Black woman affinity and activist support space for BIPOC women on Xavier’s campus. Central to her work as an activist-scholar is affirming Black women and girls’ lived experiences as sources of knowledge and developing community interventions that promote the emotional, psychological, and behavioral health of all BIPOC people.

Shatonda S. Jones, PhD, MA, CCC-SLP, CBIST: Dr. Shatonda S. Jones is an Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Education in the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Distance Education Program at St. Bonaventure University. Dr. Jones has 20 years of experience as a Speech Language Pathologist and over 15 years of teaching experience in higher education at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Dr. Jones specializes in adult and geriatric communication and swallowing disorders with a particular interest in motor speech disorders. Her research focuses on health capacity building in socially marginalized communities, diffusion of health information, cultural and linguistic diversity, innovative educational methods, and ultrasound technology as biofeedback with persons with various dysarthrias. She is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer (CBIST). She holds a PhD in Therapeutic Science from the University of Kansas, a Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology (with an emphasis in medical speech-language pathology) from the University of Iowa, and a Bachelor of Science in speech-language pathology from the University of Tulsa. She will graduate with her Master’s in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University New Orleans in May 2025 and will begin her second research doctorate, a Doctor of Theology (ThD), at Kairos University, in Fall of 2025. Dr. Jones is dedicated to integrating clinical practice, scholarship, spirituality, and advocacy in her work.

Scientific research has the power to drive equity, but only when it centers on the realities of those most often left out of discovery. This session is designed for bench scientists and STEM professionals who may not traditionally work with human populations but are seeking to integrate the values, needs, and lived experiences of historically marginalized communities into their research.

Whether you’re studying molecules, genomic sequences, or disease pathways, your work does not exist in a vacuum. Communities shape science and science, in turn, shapes communities. Join Dr. Toy Jones and Dr. Shatonda Jones for an exploration of what it means to approach research ethically, respectfully, and collaboratively, even when working at the cellular or molecular level.

We’ll discuss practical strategies for building trust and gaining access to underrepresented populations, how to design research questions that reflect community needs, and the importance of foundational ethical principles like autonomy, justice, beneficence, and respect for persons. Come ready to shift your paradigm from "research on" to "research with," even from the bench.

The Association of STEMM Pathway and Bridge Programs (ASPBP) is pleased to announce the call for presentation abstracts for the ASPBP Conference to be held virtually on the Remo digital platform from October 7-9, 2025. The ASPBP Conference provides opportunities to connect with and learn from others, and will provide you with new teaching techniques, ideas and resources.

This year abstract proposals should fit into one of four formats:

Due to the virtual format, we encourage you to research innovative ways to virtually engage participants. Collaborative submissions are encouraged!

All abstract submissions will undergo peer review using the following criteria: clarity of the proposal, the quality of content in the proposal, and interest to the ASPBP community. NBME Call for Letters of Intent: Innovations to Advance Pathways and Bridges to Medicine Programs

NBME has a long history of contributing to the medical education and assessment communities with the goal of improving patient care through quality assessment of medical professionals. To further build on our contributions and our commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the medical and assessment professions, we are providing resources to assist programs and building collaborations that aid learners with education, mentorship and resources at a crucial time in their development. We hope to help programs develop and utilize best practices to drive positive changes in medical education in the long term and support the Association of STEMM Bridge and Pathway Programs (ASPBP) in developing a pathway program community of practice. To that end, in 2024, NBME collaborated with ASPBP to establish 13 grants totaling $350,000 to institutions and other nonprofit organizations implementing pathway programs.

As we continue our support of pathways to medicine, NBME and ASPBP are initiating another call for applications in 2025 to continue to investigate the effectiveness of strategies that increase the representation of individuals in the medical profession. These grants are intended to support pathway programs across the entire educational continuum. Community-based, elementary to high school and higher education programs are invited to submit applications that focus on evaluating the evidence for success of a particular educational or programmatic intervention strategy.

There are two different funding opportunities:

SEED Grants: One-time grants of up to $20,000 for programs wanting to develop the foundation for rational design of an intervention strategy or strategies.
Material and Resource Grants: One-time grants of up to $55,000 for programs wanting to improve their curriculum with needed educational resources such as learning management software, student data management software, educational or learning software.

Eligibility to apply includes not-for-profit organizations and programs or their fiscal sponsors and not-for-profit institutions.

Initial letters of intent are due by April 28, 2025. After reviewing Letters of Intent, NBME will invite full proposals in early July. Full proposal applications are due by July 21, 2025.

NBME Awards Pathway Program Grants Nationally

NBME contributes to the medical education and assessment communities with the goal of improving patient care through quality assessment of medical professionals, supporting the development of a diverse and compassionate health care workforce. To achieve this goal, NBME – in collaboration with the Association of STEMM Pathway and Bridge Programs (ASPBP) – awarded a total of $350,000 in grants to programs that investigate the effectiveness of strategies that increase the representation of individuals in the medical profession.

By providing resources to assist programs and building collaborations that aid learners with education, mentorship and resources at a crucial time in their development, we hope to help programs develop and utilize best practices to drive positive changes in medical education in the long term and support ASPBP in developing a pathway program community of practice.

These grants support pathway programs across the entire educational continuum. Call for Tips and Tricks for Successful Pathway and Bridge Programs

ASPBP is excited to continue the series "Tips & Tricks for Successful Pathway and Bridge Programs" in the upcoming issue of PBP Wire (January/February 2025 Vol. 7). We want to hear your tips and tricks for running successful programs and are excited to announce the call for short article abstract submissions.

These articles should offer practical and feasible advice for improving the recruitment of students to and/or participation in programming, ways to increase pre-matriculation competencies of students, or ways to improve teaching and learning. Programs should target one of the following populations- K-12 outreach and enrichment, undergraduate engagement, or post-baccalaureate programs. Articles should be brief- a maximum of 800 words, not counting your abstract, references, and acknowledgments. Captions count towards the word limit. Articles are limited to a maximum combined three figures/tables, as our goal is to limit the article to two and a half pages.
Interested authors should submit a 200-word abstract discussing their proposed article by Thursday, October 31, 2024. Abstract submissions can be made on the member portal here. Individuals will be notified in mid-May of their selection. Only members who are up-to-date on their dues are eligible to submit.

The ASPBP September 2024 Webinar, 'A modified team-based learning readiness assurance process to promote collaborative learning and critical thinking in postbaccalaureate and prematriculation students,' will take place at 2 PM EDT on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. The Webinar will be led by Stephen Schneid, of University California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS).

Steve Schneid is the Director of Educational Development and Scholarship at the University California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS). Steve has taught biomedical sciences to medical and pharmacy students for over twenty years and created the Team-Based Learning Program at SSPPS and directs the summer prematriculation program at the SOM. He also was involved in the creation of the UCSD Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program and has been teaching in a significant portion of the curriculum since the program was created nearly twelve years ago.

Jasmine Brown is a UPenn medical student, Rhodes Scholar and the author of TWICE AS HARD: The Stories of Black Women Who Fought to Become Physicians from the Civil War to the 21st Century. Her book has been featured on multiple TV shows and on NPR. It’s also been highlighted in various publications including The Philadelphia Inquirer and TIME Magazine. Jasmine has spoken at universities and organizations across the country and at multiple national conferences. She is committed to using her skills and platform to help create a more diverse and inclusive medical community.

Dr. Mundo's Plenary Session is titled 'Beyond the Bars and Breaking Chains: Redefining Pathways for Minority Students in Healthcare.'

Dr. William Mundo

Dr. William Mundo is an emergency medicine resident physician at Denver Health Medical Center and earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He received an MPH from the Colorado School of Public Health in Global Health Systems Management and has undergraduate degrees in Public Health and Ethnic Studies with an emphasis on Indigenous rights and health equity. As a physician scientist, his research focuses on developing strategies to mitigate and reduce health inequities at the individual and system level. William is also author of “From Margins to Medicine: A First Generation Student’s Equity Guide in Overcoming Adversity with Diversity,” which chronicles his path to medicine as a son of undocumented immigrants from Mexico who faced many systemic challenges. William is also a husband and father of two beautiful girls.

Beyond the Bars and Breaking Chains: Redefining Pathways for Minority Students in Healthcare

Dr. Mundo will explore the critical intersection of education, equity, and healthcare careers - focusing on the systemic issues that contribute to the school-to-prison pipeline. He will dissect the factors that perpetuate this pipeline through highlighting his own personal story overcoming the school-to-prison pipeline. He will highlight the importance of pathway programs designed to support and inspire minority students to pursue careers in healthcare as a way to dismantle this pipeline and empower students to envision a future in the healthcare sector.

The ASPBP July 2024 Webinar, CORE (Community Outreach, Research & Engagement): Developing a community of practice for individuals invested in outreach and service-learning programs, will take place at 2 PM EDT on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. The Webinar will be led by Peter Vollbrecht, of Western Michigan University, and Natascha Heise, of Old Dominion University.

Peter J. Vollbrecht, PhD

Peter Vollbrecht, PhD, is originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan. After completing his PhD in Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan he joined Hope College as a faculty member in the Biology Department. He currently serves as an Associate Professor at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He currently serves as co-Director of the Master of Biomedical Sciences Degree Program and the Founder and co-Director of the Brain Explorers and Beyond outreach program at WMed. Dr. Vollbrecht's research interests center around innovative teaching methods, communication skills, outreach and service-learning, and diversifying the STEMM workforce, with a particular interest in improving diversity within the healthcare professions.

Natashca Heise, PhD

Natascha Heise, PhD, is originally from Germany and joined Old Dominion University in 2021 after receiving her PhD in Biomedical Sciences with a focus in Anatomy Education. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences and teaches various courses within the School of Medicine and School of Health Professions. Dr. Heise's research has centered around the evaluation of various pedagogical approaches in the human anatomy and neuroanatomy classroom, DEI outreach efforts, and the role of Virtual Reality in medical education.

NBME Call for Letters of Intent: Innovations to Advance Pathways and Bridges to Medicine Programs

NBME has a long history of contributing to the education and assessment communities with the goal of improving patient care through quality assessment of medical professionals. To further build on our contributions and our commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the medical and assessment professions, we are investing in pathway programs that demonstrate support of developing pathways to the medical profession through recruitment, education and retention of diverse learners. By providing resources to assist programs and building collaborations that aid learners with education, mentorship and resources at a crucial time in their development, we hope to help programs develop and utilize best practices to drive changes in diversity in medical education in the long term and support ASPBP in developing a pathway program community of practice.

To achieve this goal, NBME – in collaboration with the Association of STEMM Pathway and Bridge Programs (ASPBP) — is requesting applications to investigate the effectiveness of strategies that increase the number of underrepresented and traditionally underserved individuals in the medical profession. These grants are intended to support pathway programs across the entire educational continuum. Community-based, elementary to high school and higher education programs are invited to submit applications that focus on evaluating the evidence for success of a particular educational or programmatic intervention strategy in accomplishing the goal of advancing social justice, broader diversity and better health outcomes.

There are three different funding opportunities:

Program Grants: Three-year grants between $25,000 - $100,000 per year for programs wanting to evaluate and expand an established intervention strategy or strategies.
SEED Grants: One-time grants of up to $20,000 for programs wanting to develop the foundation for a rational design of an intervention strategy or strategies.
Material and Resource Grants: One-time grants of up to $5,000 for programs wanting to improve their curriculum with needed educational resources, such as learning management software, student data management software, educational or learning software.

Eligibility to apply includes not-for-profit organizations and programs or their fiscal sponsors and not-for-profit institutions.

Initial letters of intent are due by June 17, 2024. After reviewing Letters of Intent, NBME will invite full proposals in early July. Full proposal applications are due by September 3, 2024.

ASPBP has a Town Hall Meeting scheduled with Minneapolis Public Schools and interested mentors on WEDNESDAY, MAY 29, 2024, to discuss its upcoming MedWork Program that is launching at the Annual IAMSE Conference in June. This is a reschedule of the meeting that was originally going to take place May 15, 2024.

MedWork is a mentorship program which connects high school students with a mentor in health professions. Mentors are committed to work with the mentee for at least one year. MedWork mentors are academics, industry individuals and policy makers with a passion for mentoring future STEMM students. Students participating in MedWork have unique access to mentors around the world with expertise in STEMM. Students set and track career/educational goals and are matched with a mentor based on their specific needs. MedWork is a collaboration between Career & Technical Education (CTE), the Association of STEMM Pathway and Bridge Programs (ASPBP) and the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) to connect students to health and STEMM professionals.

Be a part of the official launch of MedWork and join us in supporting the next generation of STEMM professionals! Interested mentors will have the opportunity to meet potential mentees from Minneapolis Public Schools. Organizational leadership positions seeking enthusiastic nominees.

This is the last call reminding you that the ASPBP Nominating Committee is currently seeking nominations and self-nominations for President-Elect, Annual Conference Chair, Membership and Internal Communications Chair, Public Relations and Advocacy Chair, and Research and Scholarship Chair, as well as Western, Central, Southern, Northeastern and International Region Representatives from among the ASPBP membership. We encourage you to consider one of these positions or to nominate someone you feel would be a worthy candidate. You are encouraged to obtain consent before nominating a fellow colleague.

The General Council is the governing body that provides leadership and direction for ASPBP, and all our various programs and activities. Details on each position can be found below.

President-Elect
The President-Elect is the second highest-ranking officer of the Association and shall support the President to advance the work of the Association. At the end of the term, the President-Elect shall assume the office as President of the Association. If the President is temporarily unable to fulfill their duties to the Association, the President-Elect may be appointed Acting President by the General Council. If the President resigns or is unable to fulfill their duties for an extended period, the President-Elect shall become the President, and a new President-Elect shall be elected by a majority vote in a special election of the General Council within 30 days of resignation notice. The President-Elect serves as Chair of the Bylaws Committee. The term of the President-Elect shall be 2 years.

Annual Conference Chair
The Annual Conference Committee shall oversee the organization and implementation of the annual conference. The Committee will work with the Treasurer to coordinate revenue and expenditures for the meeting.

Membership and Internal Communications Chair
The Membership and Internal Communications Committee shall be responsible for recruiting and maintaining members for the Association. The Committee will work with the Secretary to coordinate membership communications.

Public Relations and Advocacy Chair
The Public Relations and Advocacy Committee shall actively engage with key stakeholders to expand the Association agenda at regional and national meetings, advocate for Association concerns with external organizations, and maintain a social media presence to promote Association goals. The Committee will work with the Secretary to monitor the consistency of communications with partner organizations and the public.

Research and Scholarship Chair
The Research and Scholarship Committee shall work with the Finance Committee to develop and maintain a grant funding program for Association members. The Committee will work with the Treasurer to apply for financial mechanisms to support the Association’s Values, Vision, and Mission.

Regional Representatives
The Regional Representatives serve as Chairs for the membership groups of each listed region. A list of the states and provinces belonging to each region are specified on the Association website. Regional Representatives will hold at least quarterly meetings of their regions, or as needed more frequently, and will inform the General Council of activities that may be of interest to the general association.

ASPBP is excited to feature Vicky Rhine as the 2024 Program Chair! Below, Rhine talks about what ASPBP means to her, what she is looking forward to about the upcoming conference and more!

What does being a part of ASPBP mean to you?
ASPBP recognizes and supports the work of pathway and bridge program professionals that often goes unacknowledged. I firmly believe that if we want to see increased student success and improved representation in healthcare, we must continue enhancing the curriculum and programming that provides a safety net for students of all needs and backgrounds. ASPBP is that connector for PBP professionals, allowing for collaboration and the sharing of ideas for future innovation.

Why do you think ASPBP membership is valuable?
There are very few resources available specifically to PBP professionals. Some conferences address general education, others address healthcare, but rarely has there been a group dedicated to pathway and bridge programming! ASPBP is THE opportunity for groups across the country to work together for this purpose.

What are you most looking forward to with the conference coming up in October?
This year's conference is going to offer increased opportunities for networking and collaboration. As Conference Committee Chair, I am excited to create shared spaces for professionals of the field to meet with one another and identify concrete strategies for improving their pathway and bridge programs. Our conference planning committee is working hard to curate an experience that will build upon the success of previous meetings and accelerate the success of ASPBP and its members!

Anything else about yourself or ASPBP that you want to mention?I thrive on working collaboratively and enjoy any opportunity to work with ASPBP members! If anyone has interest in checking out our conference planning committee or submitting an idea for this year's conference, please reach out to me!
A little about me outside of work: I live in Denver, CO, I spend my summers exploring new hiking trails and my winters developing my ski skills. I have a labradoodle named Phoebe and I am getting married in July! It'll be a busy and exciting 2024!

The ASPBP March 2024 Webinar, IMPACT the RACE Introduction, will take place at 2 PM EDT on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. The Webinar will be led by Rakesh Patel and Loretta Jackson-Williams, both of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine.

Patel earned a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from St. Joseph’s University, and received his bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin in Kinesiology and Biology. After completing a Management Internship at Neurology and Pain Management Associates (Lillington, NC), Patel obtained a Hospital Administration residency position at UMMC in 2015. After completion of his residency, Patel went on to work in the UMMC Strategic Planning and Business Process Improvement departments, where he provided project management and process improvement support to many of the organization’s senior executives. In 2020, Patel moved to the School of Medicine, where he currently serves as the Director of Business Operations and as Program Manager for the IMPACT the RACE grant project.

Jackson-Williams has always been an educator at heart. Her passion for education has culminated with her current position as the Vice Dean for Medical Education at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. She began her journey in education because of her parents who were both educators in the Mississippi Delta. She grew up in Indianola, MS where she attended the public schools. In 1987 she completed her undergraduate studies at the historic Tougaloo College with a degree in chemistry. While in college she was engaged in the campus and local communities and became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. In 1994 she completed her studies at Boston University School of Medicine located in Boston, Massachusetts and earned a doctorate in biochemistry and a medical degree. While in Boston she continued to serve in campus and local communities as she developed advocacy skills as an elected officer for local, regional and national positions with the Student National Medical Association. From Boston she moved to California to complete residency in Emergency Medicine at Highland Hospital in the Alameda County Medical Center of Oakland, CA. After completing a year at Highland Hospital as an attending physician, she and her young family returned to their home state of Mississippi where she has maintained her focus on education in the Department of Emergency Medicine and as an administrator in the SOM.

Developed from a Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) grant awarded to the School of Medicine in 2020, the IMPACT the RACE Rural Track Program is geared to enhance rural medical education for students, with the goal to increase primary care physicians throughout rural communities in Mississippi.
Focused to fulfill the primary care needs of rural Mississippi, by providing students exemplary education, hands on training, and exposure to these rural communities.

Access to primary health care throughout rural communities in Mississippi.

Mission

IMPACT the RACE is committed to enhance the education of all medical students by exposing the gratification and challenges within primary care in medically underserved communities in rural Mississippi.

Call for ASPBP Officer Nominations

The ASPBP Nominating Committee is currently seeking nominations and self-nominations for Annual Conference chair as well as Western, Central, Southern, Northeastern and International Region Representatives from among the ASPBP membership. We encourage you to consider one of these positions or to nominate someone you feel would be a worthy candidate. You are encouraged to obtain consent before nominating a fellow colleague.

The General Council is the governing body that provides leadership and direction for ASPBP, and all our various programs and activities. Details on each position can be found below.

Annual Conference Chair
The Annual Conference Committee shall oversee the organization and implementation of the annual conference. The Committee will work with the Treasurer to coordinate revenue and expenditures for the meeting.

Regional Representatives
The Regional Representatives serve as Chairs for the membership groups of each listed region. A list of the states and provinces belonging to each region will be specified on the Association website. Regional Representatives will hold at least quarterly meetings of their regions, or as needed more frequently, and will inform the General Council of activities that may be of interest to the general association.

We are just a few weeks away from the ASPBP 2023 Virtual Conference! But before you log in to connect with your peers in pathways programs, we would like to describe the types of sessions you will experience during the Conference.

2023 Virtual Conference Info

What is a "Short Communication" session?
During these live sessions, presenters will be assigned to a breakout room where conference participants can join them to discuss their work, or ask questions. Each presentation will be allotted 10 minutes to share research and 5 minutes for Q&A with the audience. Our hope is that presenters will have an interactive environment to discuss their scholarly work and answer questions.

Short Research Presentations will be presented Wednesday, October 4, from 1:00 - 1:30 PM EDT.

What are the "ASPBP Town Halls"?
The ASPBP invites you to either (or both!) of our Town Hall sessions on Wednesday, October 4 at 1:30 PM or Thursday, October 5 at 2:00 PM EDT. These town halls are open to all and are meant as an introduction to the Association. Attendees will meet various committees and have the opportunity to ask questions about our membership, opportunities, and how ASPBP can benefit you and your Pathways & Bridges Programs.

What is a "Breakout Session"?
The Breakout Sessions will be concurrent Mini Workshops, Roundtable Discussions, and Problem-Solving Sessions.

Mini Workshops will address topics with high-interest potential to the ASPBP community, and foster active engagement of the participants. Participants will be able to take home specific knowledge and skills. Mini Workshops will be designed with a small group in mind, without the ability to form breakout groups.

Mini Workshops will be presented during the Breakout Session blocks on Wednesday, October 4 from 2:00 - 3:00 PM EDT and Thursday, October 5 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM EDT.

Round Table Discussions are guided by a topic or case with a set of discussion triggers, while Problem-solving Sessions are an opportunity to present a problem/challenge/issue presenters have encountered in their Pathway or Bridge program, with a set of discussion triggers that can foster a collaborative effort to find a solution during the session.

Roundtable discussions will be presented during the Breakout Session blocks on Wednesday, October 4 from 2:00 - 3:00 PM EDT and Thursday, October 5 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM EDT.

What are "Program Descriptions"?
Program Description presenters will develop posters to share information about their program with the larger ASPBP community. The goal of the Program Descriptions session is to allow ASPBP members to exchange ideas and insight on pathway programming work. Content may include lessons learned related to the program such as innovations & best practices, target student populations, etc. As the community surrounding pathway programs and bridges continues to grow, learning what other programs are doing and finding a sense of community in the work of others is incredibly valuable.

Program Descriptions will be presented Wednesday, October 4 from 3:00 - 4:00 PM EDT and Thursday, October 5, from 2:30 - 3:00 PM EDT.

What is the "Virtual Help Desk"?
The ASPBP Team will be holding two Virtual Help Desk sessions prior to the start of each day of programming. These sessions are an opportunity for attendees to ask questions about the program, the schedule, the presenters, and the conference platform. Even if you just want to be sure that your camera is working properly before you start your day, we will be there to help!
