ASPBP JEDI (Justice, Equity Diversity, and Inclusion) Committee Resources

The JEDI Committee shall assist the President, who shall serve as Committee Chair, with overseeing and ensuring that all aspects and operations of the Association are mindful of and use best practices for ensuring a focus on JEDI as outlined in the Values, Vision, and Mission of the Association. The JEDI Committee defines their acronym as follows:

Justice
Justice involves actively identifying and removing barriers that prevent diversity, inclusion and equity. It is a proactive approach to dismantling systems and practices of oppression (exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural dominance, violence) and replacing them with systems that provide access to resources and opportunity for everyone, share power with everyone in the ecosystem, and drive true transformation.

Equality
Equity is about all people having fair and equal outcomes by providing them with opportunities to achieve their full potential, acknowledging that people do not all start from the same place. Systemic barriers to STEMM education access exist for different individuals/groups and require different interventions to result in equal opportunities and outcomes.

Diversity
Diversity is a foundational principle of JEDI. It describes all the ways in which people differ, encompassing the different characteristics that make one individual or group different from another. Diversity is characterized by the representative presence of different people with varying intersectional identities across race, ability, gender identity, class, size, religious practice, sexuality, citizenship status, political party affiliation, and more.

Inclusion
Inclusion is “the act of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate.” Inclusion involves having diverse people at the table as equal partners, policymakers, and voices. Not only does inclusion focus on hearing and seeing diverse people and their needs and ideas but retaining that presence in a space over time.
